Prevent damp and mold
Mold grows where there is moisture. Controlling moisture is the best way to prevent it.
Everyday habits
- Use the extractor fan or open a window when you shower or cook.
- Wipe condensation from windows and tiles.
- Dry clothes outdoors or in a well-ventilated room.
- Keep furniture a little away from cold outside walls so air can move.
- Fix leaks as soon as you notice them.
Cleaning small patches
For a small patch of mold on a hard surface, wear gloves and a mask, and scrub with detergent and water. Dry the area fully.
When to get help
Large areas, mold that keeps returning, or a musty smell with no visible cause may mean a hidden leak. Tell your landlord or call a professional. If anyone in the home has asthma or allergies that get worse, mention it to a doctor.
