Stay for less beyond hotels
A hotel is only one way to sleep well on a trip. Other options can be cheaper, roomier or more local.
Apartments and rental homes
- Good for families, groups and longer stays, because a kitchen cuts food costs.
- Check the total price. Cleaning fees and service fees can add a lot.
- Read the cancellation rules, and check that the place is allowed under local rules. Some cities restrict short-term rentals.
Hostels
Hostels are not only for young backpackers. Many have private rooms with their own bathroom at a fraction of hotel prices. Shared kitchens and common rooms are a bonus for solo travelers. Read reviews for cleanliness, security and noise.
Guesthouses, B&Bs and family-run hotels
In much of the world, a small guesthouse gives you a clean room, a home-cooked breakfast and local advice for less than a chain hotel. Message the owner with any questions before you book.
Other ideas
- University rooms: some universities rent dorm rooms to visitors in the summer.
- Camping and campervans: a good fit for national parks and long road trips. Book campsites early in busy seasons.
- House sitting and home exchange: free or very cheap, but they take planning and trust. Use well-reviewed services.
- Night trains and buses: where they exist, a night journey also covers a night of lodging.
- Points: hotel and credit card points can pay for free nights if you travel often.
Stay safe
Choose places with plenty of recent reviews, and read how the host answers questions. Pay through the booking platform, not by direct bank transfer to a stranger.
