Waste less food at home
Throwing away less food saves real money.
Habits that help
- Put newer groceries behind older ones so the older ones get used first.
- Freeze bread, cooked rice and ripe fruit before they spoil.
- Turn leftovers into a new meal, such as soup, fried rice or a wrap.
- Check dates, but also use your eyes and nose. A "best before" date is about quality, not safety.
- Buy smaller amounts of fresh food that spoils quickly.
Store food well
Keep potatoes and onions in a cool, dark place, and away from each other. Keep herbs in a glass of water. Keep most fruit and vegetables in the fridge crisper.
Use it or freeze it
Once a week, look at what is about to go bad and cook with it first.
