Book cheaper hotels

TravelBooking tips4 minute readUpdated October 2026

Hotel prices change by day, season and even by the hour. These habits often lower the bill without lowering the quality.

Compare, then check the hotel directly

  • Search a few booking sites to see the range of prices in the area.
  • Then visit the hotel's own website, or call or email them. Hotels sometimes match the site price, or add free breakfast, a late checkout or an upgrade.
  • Join the hotel's free loyalty program. It can unlock member rates and perks.

Choose free cancellation when you can

A refundable rate usually costs a little more, but it lets you rebook if the price drops. Check the same room again a few weeks before you travel.

Mind the location, not just the price

  • A cheaper room far from the center can cost more in transport and time.
  • Look at the map, not only the list. Staying near a metro or train station is often a better deal than staying next to a famous sight.
  • Read recent reviews, especially about noise, cleanliness and safety at night.

Watch for extra charges

  • Many cities add a nightly tourist tax that is paid at the hotel.
  • Some hotels, especially in resort areas, add a resort fee or charge for parking, Wi-Fi or breakfast. Add these up before you compare.

Time your stay

  • Prices are often lower in the off-season. See Travel in the cheapest season.
  • Stays of several nights can unlock weekly or long-stay discounts.
  • Last-minute deals exist, but they are a gamble in busy places. Book the key nights early.

Look beyond the standard hotel

Guesthouses, small family-run hotels and private rooms in hostels can cost much less. See Stay for less beyond hotels.
